I went here to celebrate my birthday with a friend and had a lovely experience! The red curry scallops were the highlight - super well cooked and flavorful! We both liked the slaw on top as well. The gruyere dumplings weren't as rich and flavorful as I remembered, but still a solid dish. The duck noodle soup hit the spot on a rainy day, although I wanted the duck to be a little more tender. The sauces that came with it were perfect, but I do think it needed them for the extra flavor. Still, I really enjoyed it once I mixed them in! I really appreciated the ice cream for dessert! I didn't expect them to do anything, and it was such a lovely surprise (and the cookie crumbs on top were very good!). Service here can be slow, but I think the food is solid and fun. It has so much going on (coffee shop, sneaker shop, restaurant), but I like how eclectic it is. Their specials and pop-ups are great too!

Maketto is, by no exaggeration, my favorite restaurant on earth. Every time I'm back in DC I have to stop by. It is a truly unique multi-purpose community space that combines cafe, dining, retail, and a stunning outdoor patio/garden. They sell sneakers and vinyl on the first floor, amidst the dining seating. Many years ago, I was a goofy law student living off H street and needed a place to drink coffee and get my work done, and stumbled upon this space purely by accident. As a cafe, Maketto rocks. Their iced coffee is strong, 90's hip hop is always playing and there is a good amount of seating for students and teleworkers alike. Lots of that seating overlooks their garden which is an aesthetic perk. Daytime tip: their spinach croissant is superb and I still dream about it. The menu changes seasonally. My friends and I ordered a bunch of small plates family style. Not one single miss. For starters, we got the pork bao, scallion pancakes, and a scallop red curry that was an absolute showstopper. The scallops were so tender, served alongside zucchini, and the red curry was just so rich and flavorful. We then progressed to the waiter's recommendation, the fried chicken. I am not usually a fan of fried chicken but this was hands-down the most crispy, juicy, sweet and sticky fried chicken I've ever had. It was served atop sliced bread and dressed with slices of chili pepper. If you order anything at Maketto, ORDER THIS. We also shared a crab fried rice that was tasty. The waitstaff is so kind and patient with helping you craft the perfect set of small plates for your table. They also seem sensitive to dietary restrictions and made a point of asking our table. I really love this place with all my heart. Tourists don't venture to the depths of northeast DC often, but as a former DC resident I cannot recommend you hike up to the 13th block of H st for some of the best food you'll ever eat.

We definitely ordered more than what's pictured, but I guess we were hungry. We tried their signature fried chicken and that was yum. The service was okay, we opted to sit outside but we were on the upper level and the sun was beaming down on us the whole time. Ambiance, I definitely would sit inside next time.

Simply put, an excellent restaurant. The food is great and the atmosphere is fun and comfortable. We got the bao platter and for dessert the beignets -- both delicious. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable. I brought my family when they were in town and they loved it!
